Stranded on a Sandbar

Just got back from a walk while listening to Jimmy Buffett's album Volcano, one of the best albums ever!

Do you, like me, ever feel like this
I feel like I'm stranded on a sandbar
Stuck in my tracks like a street car
Playin' it for all that it's worth
I'm just payin' for my sins on earth

Now I used to go crazy for days at a time
Now I'm takin' my time with my days
Haven't found the answers like some that I know
I'm just stuck in a fairly nice maze

An old friend of mine, now passed on, once played the role of a Soviet submarine captain who accidentally stranded his submarine on a sandbar on the fictitious “Gloucester Island,” sort of a make-believe Martha’s Vineyard. He later became famous with roles like the lead in “Fiddler on the Roof,” but this was always my favorite role of his. I remember laughing my ass off at age 15 at that film, even though I spoke no Russian at the time, and never dreamed the guy playing the sub’s captain would ever become a friend.

I will listen to Buffet’s song when I get home today.

About 20 years after the film, a Soviet sub really did get stranded on a sandbar, but in Sweden. The Swedes didn’t find it very funny at the time, as I recall.
