Trying unsuccessfully to donate to Jaime Harrison via ActBlue.

I never used to donate to candidates outside my own state / jurisdiction. Felt it was unfair, somewhow.

Well, fuggit. Here I go!

1. I just donated to Harrison about an hour ago. ActBlue worked, because I got a receipt. But,

when I hit contribute, it wasn't clear it had been processed. So I waited for the acknowledgement email, that came in a few minutes.

It wasn't a lot, and I contributed to Biden, Doug Jones, and a few Georgia Democrats.

2. I have an account with them, so here's how I do it;

(and BTW, setting up an account is pretty simple, and you can safely save a preferred payment method)

I go to their Log-In page

After logging in, I click "Account" in the upper right corner which opens a drop-down menu, and there I click "Directory"

That allows you to search in various ways, including via name, State, Party, committee or organization.

Type in "Jaime Harrison" in the search box at the top and you should be good to go!

5. Maybe it's my slow internet...

but I'm getting the same problem. I click on pay with Paypal, add the tip, the screen comes up to process, then it just disappears!

I gave up on Act Blue years ago.

Their software started having glitches right and left, and when I asked them how to remedy the problem, they just said (in effect) that it was my fault and I was too stupid to use their site. I got repeat charges when I said I wanted to make a one-time contribution, etc. etc. Then, when I found out they take out 3.95% for themselves from every contribution made, that was the end of it for me.

Now, instead of the candidates of my choice getting 92% or 93% of what I contribute (Act Blue plus the credit card company taking their cut), I just send checks. It takes longer, and some candidates are so completely into the digital era, they even forget to display a mailing address on their website. I know a few in Texas that have changed their website after I brought it up with them.

But think of it--yes, the credit card solution saves you a stamp and a trip to the post office. But if Democratic candidates are going to raise a half billion dollars this cycle, and it all goes through Act Blue, then $40 million of that gets split between Act Blue and the credit card companies. That's $40 MILLION that could have made the difference in winning or losing a few close key races.

Dust off the old check book, take a refresher course on how to write by hand, and send a check.

6. They are not taking out that percentage for themselves.

That represents the credit card fee that you mention. ActBlue does not receive any money from you unless you decide to tip. If you're going to donate via credit card, then you're going to have to pay a credit card fee. If candidates did not offer the opportunity to donate via credit card, then their fundraising would drop by much, much , much more than the percentage that the credit card fees represent.

Saying that "if everyone donated via check, then Democrats would have 4% more money" is a complete fantasy. If online donations weren't available, and people could only donate via check, I'd hazard that donations wouldn't even be 20% of what they are now.

7. Same thing happened to me.

I cycled twice and then was afraid it was taking a donation each time and stopped. I haven't gotten a receipt, so pretty sure neither went through.
