Dragon snakeheads: a whole new family of fish discovered off southern India. (Nat Geo)

Dragon snakeheads: It’s not every day you discover a whole new family of fish. But researchers say they have, deep in underground waters of southern India. The whole family of fish, named dragon snakeheads, diverged from their closest relatives more than 100 million years ago, Nat Geo’s Douglas Main writes. “We think this is the most exciting discovery in the fish world of the last decade,” says ichthyologist Ralf Britz. (Pictured ... The Gollum snakehead, named after the subterranean character in Lord of the Rings, is one of two species in the newfound taxonomic family of fishes.)
