I don't think Norbert lived a long life. She only had him for about eight years.

I had never heard of Norbert and the post made me think it was someone’s dog who had passed away, using the pass tense “was a good dog”.

Your response let me know he is a celebrity. So looked him up. He’s still alive, or at least there is no announcement of his death.
