We lived there for 4 long winters while my husband was stationed at KI Sawyer AFB.

The first 2 years we were there, his son from his first foolish marriage lived with us, and attended the local school in the nearby town of Gwinn. One one occasion, his homework from sceince class was to label the parts of a rifle on the mimeograph that was sent home. Another time, again from science class, it was labeling the parts of a snowmobile.

When we heard that the main city near the base was Marquette, we happily and naively said, “Oh, a college town! Marquette University is there.” Boy, were we ever wrong. Eh?

Also, as we were driving there, and getting closer and closer, I noticed lots of little convenience stores with signs in the windows for pasties. Not being a local, I knew nothing about pasties being a food item, and thought all these stores were selling stripper/pole dancer paraphernalia and wondered what the hell sort of place we were moving to.

It was a long 4 winters.

...it was Appleton, in the fall. And on Sunday, when the Packers were on...the state just *stopped*. Stores empty, the roads empty...it was like a giant ghost town. You could have done 110 MPH down Main Street and been perfectly safe. It was really actually kind of cool. And I loved the state--beautiful, and the people as nice as their reputation. Too bad they've had political issues...they deserve better than Walker and Ryan...

We still have a conservative hypermajority in our Supreme Court, though.
