Question for DU dentists and folks who've needed crowns.

Spouse needs two crowns. Quoted $1,200 for each. No discounts for doing them at the same time.

Is this price reasonable? And no discounts?

This is a local practice. I'm sure there are other dentists, but I haven't checked with them. Aspen Dental is here, but, again, I haven't checked on prices. I've read posts here that are not favorable.

Your input is welcome.

Thanks.

Told me I had possible oral cancer, so I went to an oral surgeon and he laughed at them.

I'm lucky to have a Union retirement plan that includes dental.

when it comes to dental/medical if rather pay a little more and go with someone with good references. That being said, some dentists make the crown while you wait so only one trip. Others you have a temp and go back when the permanent one comes in from the lab.

5. The high cost of dental care

coupled with the awful benefits most dental plans have, is an abomination in this country. Many don't get the dental care they need and, as a result, some die from infections, etc.

Unless you sign up for a high-interest loan (Care Credit, etc.), the majority of dental care is pay-as-you-go. Who has $2,500 extra in their bank accounts? Most people don't.

To the OP -- is there a dental school anywhere near you? They typically offer very good care. It's usually performed by students supervised by faculty, but in some more severe cases, the "faculty practice" at the dental school does the work themselves (usually at 1/3 to 1/2 the cost).

Watch Dollars and Dentists, FRONTLINE's joint investigation with the Center for Public Integrity into the nation's broken dental-care system. A class-action lawsuit accuses Aspen Dental, one of the nation's largest corporate-dental chains, of illegally owning dental practices and of deceiving patients.Oct 19, 2012

find info and truly get informed about procedures already done and what i need to do to fix what has been done, or if there is any fixes. Many of us are so clueless, that we are so de-pendent on professionals.

There is a rather busy industry in dental tourism to Mexican cities along the Arizona border. Nogales, Mexico is right across the border from Nogales Arizona. The city of Algodones, Mexico is very close to Yuma, Arizona, and has been given the nickname Molar City because of the dental offices there. Many people from U.S. are crossing the border for excellent care at very reasonable prices.

Just an idea tossed out.

9. Here in NoVa, a number of 'franchise' dentist advertise heavily. Seen $ 699 for 1 crown.

I tried one, had very modern equipment, but found several repairs that needed to be done.

Went back to my old DDs, who said, 'not needed'. Have heard that the franchise people make up for the ads with unnecessary work.

One of them went bad and I wound up needing an implant a few years later which ran over $4,000.

Because of the absurdly high cost of dental care in this country, you can determine people's economic class by looking at the state of their teeth.

Same pricing. I had to get FOUR at one time, just a year ago. I had quite luckily come into almost the exact amount from my mother's estate the same week (I know, it sounds crazy even to me), so after freaking out at the price, I was able to cover it.
