(5,477 posts)Memorial Field in Mount Vernon, NY, just north of NYC. Many community events were held here - my high school graduation, concerts (The Jackson Five just as they were getting well-known, and I saw an amazing performance by James Brown during a 'Summer Concert Series' that the city used to put on), school football, pony-league baseball, etc. Had a large area for picnics and other activities.
Greene managed to get through multiple takes, guzzling a Coke for each one...like 17 times. He said he was sloshing pretty good when they finished. He agreed to do the commercial so he could get a little bit away from the "Mean" monicker - to show that off the field he was a pretty nice guy.
The stadium and field have been in abysmal shape, and they city and county are finally doing the work needed. The grandstand with the bleachers and tunnel will probably have to be demolished, as they are in really dangerous shape. Here's a video a local guy made a couple of years ago showing the state of it:

(2,768 posts)They still had concerts and such going into the 00's and had plans to refit it to be sports stadium for local colleges. I don't know what happened exactly but it closed for that purpose and stayed closed. I passed by recently and everything has been removed and taken down to dirt. I guess they are moving along with building something with all of the construction vehicles onsite. Still, "The Field" has been closed for a long time now and an entire generation has grown up without it ever being open.

(5,477 posts)a lot of illegal dumping of hazardous materials on the site also took place. They had to do a lot of mitigation to get it to where they are now. Glad to see that they are FINALLY making progress, and it looks like the current plans are good.
I left Mount Vernon in 1972 when I went into the Air Force a few months after graduation. Have visited a few times...the last time I was in NY (several years ago, for a family funeral) I made sure to go to Johnny's Pizzeria (originally on 3rd Street, then Gramatan, now on Lincoln Ave.) and pick up several pizzas to introduce a 5th generation of our family to their pizza. My grandfather took my mother there when she was a child, and we used to eat there every few months.

(4,723 posts)Too many products these days are of diminished quality, no doubt due in large part to corner cutting to make more profit for people who already have obscene amounts of money. Dominos and Pizza Hut, I really don't like theirs. Little Caesars I kind of like.
