The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsI just found out my HBO/Max subscription includes Turner Classic Movies!!
Not the channel, but a sizable collection of the films. Xfinity moved TCM to a SPORTS PACKAGE, last year, and I've been bereft of my favorite distraction, ever since.
The down side is, for now I can only watch on my laptop. Apparently Xfinity has to do some sort of app addition to their "set tops". ( I assume that means cable box?)
Regardless, I'm feeling pretty chuffed, tonight.

(2,882 posts)I don't want to subscribe to a live tv package or cable/sat which is the only other way to get any of the TCM stuff...wish they would offer it as a stand alone service....

(26,251 posts)I picked up HBO because I know it's going to be a long, lonely Winter in self-isolation. I've never seen a single episode of Game of Thrones and thought, why not see what everyone seemed so obsessed with watching. I had no idea about the TCM connection until I did a little research on HBO now being called HBO Max. I thought maybe they'd bought up Cinemax!
Admittedly, I'm pretty geeked about being able to browse and watch what ever tickles my fancy. If I wasn't sleepy, I'd be watching 'The Great Dictator', right now. I'm hoping they will load up a bunch of Bette Davis films.
Honestly, I feel like I just won some sort of lottery.

(13,565 posts)Cable is included, and the landlord has the sports package that includes TCM. But for some reason, I don't get it on my TV. I guess the cable box is smaller, or older, or something. I wish, wish I had TCM.

(26,251 posts)I love being able to tune in to some quality Canadian broadcasts, and I love, love, love classic movies.
When they migrated TCM to that package, I 'voiced my opinion' to Xfinity. They weren't particularly gracious. Now they've deleted even more movie channels. I'm still considering dropping everything but their internet (they really are the only option in the Flint area) and subscribing to Brit Box and Hulu Plus. Last I checked, Hulu Plus include TCM.
I think they should bundle things like shopping, sports channels and religious shows into their own separate bundles. And, ideally, a bundle with TCM and Fox Movie Classics (if that's even still around.) I'd add a straight classic movie bundle in a heart beat.

(6,899 posts)for it. I have a firestick that I got when Samsung stopped supporting hbogo on my older tv. Then HBO ended hbogo and Amazon did not have an AP for HBOmax. However, after a month or two I found out that the firestick could use the google store hbomax AP for android tv. I followed the instructions and it did work the second time I tried. Amazon now has an hbomax ap for the firestick.

Thanks!!

(18,612 posts)A lot of good ones too but I saw Boris Karloff in The Mask of Fu Manchu last night.
How on earth did people consider this professional entertainment?
It seemed like something thrown together by some 6th graders who had a lot of money to build sets with.
I read that even Karloff and Myrna Loy were taken aback and decided they had to play it tongue in cheek.

(26,251 posts)And there are some films I've seen dozens of times and still want to watch dozens more. 'The Best Years of our Lives', 'Mrs. Miniver', 'Leave Her to Heaven', ANY film with Bette Davis - I could go on and on and on. Oh, and 1930's gangster films. LOVE them.

(9,720 posts)Now if I can just figure out how to access the thing. I get HBO and HBO Max through Amazon Prime, so it may be complicated.

(26,251 posts)It showed a list of providers and pulled everything right up, via my Xfinity account. Easy Peasy.

(2,882 posts)installing the HBOMax app on your streaming device (unless it is a Roku, but this is supposed to change soon) and using your HBO channel log in from Amazon...they sure don't make it easy.
