Is Jeff TWEEDY a reincarnated Will ROGERS? Gave a 30 sec inspirational talk to Seth MEYERS

I always just listen to stuff in the background while I do the DU laptop thing, which is one reason I get called on misrepresenting what I heard.

So my one ear perked up when this dude was telling Seth about *inspiration* and creating. He said (I'm paraphrasing) that he doesn't wait to have some bolt of inspiration, that you have to soak in whatever comes your way, have to keep keeping a spoon in/stirring the broth (I'm really twisting things here), that even while maybe mediocre stuff is bubbling around (whoa, I'm into "mangling" territory here) you are honing skills that will serve well forging the good stuff, whenever *that* happens, but you have to trudge along the road all the while before getting there.

As one of those English Majors who told everybody for 50 years the biggest book since Don Quixote was my destiny, while also hanging around for Inspiration to do the work, this dude's message struck a momentary gong. (Am letting all the metaphors MIX as they will. ) It's not new. I've seen a three minute YouTube by a Hollywood screenwriter or t.v. writer, answering the "advice" question. She said, "Just *DO* it. Stop telling people.

******So I'd never heard of this TWEEDY dude and Teh Google popped this link with QUOTES from him. Metaphisical!1 His Wiki says he's got his share of temper, over a bandmate breaking up a band or something. I like that mix of zen and OG. He's won Grammy(s). He sang a song on Seth's show, it made no impression on me.

He was a founding member of seminal alt-country band Uncle Tupelo (presumably the band he referred to as breaking up, the other founder being Jay Farrar). But since 1994 he's led the band Wilco, which is arguably the greatest American band of the past 25 years. I've been into Jeff and Jay since 1993, right before Uncle Tupelo broke up.

Not every song they've ever done is great or anything, but they do have a TON of great songs.

Jeff also does solo stuff which is generally okay but he usually brings his best stuff to the band ...

A couple Wilco classics ...

The great jazz artist Nels Cline has been the band's guitarist for about 12 years now IIRC ...

From their third record in 1999 ... great tune, got some airplay back then and still comes on certain types of stations today ...

is along lines of TCHAIKOVSKY (in depth), the one opera Carmen, plus Pop bouncy stuff - everything with a catchy MELODY!1

(And, no, am not saying that the song he sang on Seth's show was not melodic, although I couldn't hum it now if my life depended on it.)

Am not in any way enviously putting somebody down who is way out of my league. Comparing his quotes to Will ROGERS is a compliment coming from me.

I'm grateful for the background info you provided, and will soak up whatever else comes, but truth be told I am not likely to click on the links to his music.

all that much. They're a fairly experimental rock band, and most of the 'hooks' of their songs take a few spins to settle into your brain, not much is instantly catchy. But it rewards repeated listens.

Jeff Tweedy is an American treasure and as I say the leader of arguably the greatest rock band the US has produced across the last 25 years ... I mean there's barely anyone to compare them to band-wise ... it's mostly solo acts that have been around that long, and very few of them are rock and roll. Pearl Jam is probably their closest competition.

And they're still putting out vital music, never resorting to trying to cash in on past glories, etc. Hell, it's been 25 years and I don't even think they HAVE a 'Wilco's Greatest Hits' album. If there is I'm pretty sure there's only one and it came out a long time ago. That's how 'not looking back' they are as a band.

stubborn ignorance and thanks for the clear erudition. I posted about him because his verbal riff intrigued me, certainly not to be offensive. And it was impressive that there is a whole link devoted to his quotations.

While my mindset about music genres seems fixed and limited, I'm full of contradictions. When somebody asks whether I like Country, I say I like three Willie NELSONs. Otoh, back to the small side, I am repulsed by jazz and others. But it's unfathomable to me to hear some say they use music to "relax". It's not utilitarian to me.

Anyway, really, thanks on multiple levels, could go on like this but am worn out.
