update below at post 15
tell me about it please?
can my old galaxy 5 handle it? is it dangerous in any way? what do you like or dislike? any tips or warnings?
my friend in Germany finally got a cell phone (forced into it by a Hungarian friend that works in Italy, she is NOT representative of most Germans LOL) and wants to do some wine tastings with me with it.
she just ordered me a very nice selection of (of course) German wines for my birthday to be sent from California. another GREAT use of technology!

(1,040 posts)I don't know if the Galaxy 5 can handle it, but it worked well on my probably-newer Android phone. We were able to video chat, audio chat and send/receive photos with little to no problem.
I know it is popular "out there" in the world beyond the US but as I am generally camera averse even the few zooms I have done have been with no video from me. I won't mind (I think) with her since we haven't seen each other in more than 4 years so this will be a new tech adventure for me.

(5,170 posts)Was on a 4 way loners party on night of the Biden victory speech. We toasted Champagne with 5000miles between callers. Great system. Only tool from Facebook I use
I use it with an iPhone 6, old iPad and MacBook Air.
yeah could be a good way for me to enjoy my wines or whatever again. I'm the only drinker in the house now and it gets to where I miss it but don't feel like bothering when there isn't anyone around to share with.

(15,084 posts)It worked fine. It's part of the Facebook "family", so if you have an aversion to FB, then you won't like that part of it.
We both had Android phones and had no problems.
Besides, that's how Jared keeps in touch with his BFF MBS!
Kali
(55,007 posts)more about time wasting than the other nefarious reasons to not like them, though. so that isn't a problem - do the two things interconnect in any way?
ugh Jared and his BFF

(15,084 posts)I don't think it will make a difference - although you will probably get lots of ads trying to get you to sign up!
The only problem I had was that I only had FB on my desktop computer (which I'm not using now) and not on my laptop OR my phone. Whenever a notification from FB showed up, it would ping my phone - even though FB wasn't downloaded there. I removed What'sapp from my phone - don't need it now, and the notifications from FB stopped.

(55,007 posts)I have all the notifications I could find turned off so hopefully that helps.

(5,170 posts)WhatsApp or Zapy as it is called in some countries,(the W sound is a problem for foreign speakers) is completely standalone; does not utilize the FB messaging, chats, calls.

(7,715 posts)It's a fantastic piece of software for your phone ESPECIALLY for communicating (voice, video, and text) to overseas acquaintances. A few years ago, it was one of the few apps that worked well on your phone, and it picked up huge market share around the world, but not so much in the US.
These days, with Microsoft Teams etc for phones and desktops, its just one of many.
P.S. A lot of Trump's folks used WhatsApp to communicate with respect to election help they received from Russia, and, if I'm not mistaken, Bob "Bobby 3 Sticks" Mueller's "crack" investigative team couldn't discover what was communicated via the app.

(28,817 posts)It doesnt have to be a video call. Text or phone or video call.
Its very much cheaper to make international calls.

(11,288 posts)It sends larger videos than the message app on my Samsung 7

(7,947 posts)Worked as well as the internet works on the phone. It's internet calling. Both people have to have it installed beforehand. It's free, and good for international calls.

(55,007 posts)it worked! we talked for about 2 hours on Tuesday with champagne. today was already my third day drinking this year. first was Saturday when election was finally called. Tuesday was my birfday and first time talking to my friend in about 4 years.
so we decided 2 pm for me and that would be 10 for her. she was having wine and I decided to finally use the limes that were falling off my tree, and some mint that hasn't frozen yet.
at 2 we both sent out "ready" pictures and I clicked the video call button.
we laughed and talked and did show and tell of crap on our desks and both ate pistachios at the same time. I walked around so she could see Watson and next week I will go drinking in my car or truck and do a ranch tour. LOL
the best part is when you toast to the camera the two glasses really almost touch. all the app needs a detector and "clink" sound!

(55,007 posts)forgot to put the bottle of rum in the photo.
mojitos are kind of a lot of work with the sugar and the muddling and cutting limes and gathering all the stuff. opening a bottle of wine is so much easier!
