As I approach the end of my life, two things of which I am enormously proud is that...

...I never signed up for Twitter, and I never signed up for Facebook.

I may have lost face, but at least I can say I'm not a twit.

It made life worth living.

I've been involved in tech for 50 years and have been logged into all sorts of systems.

I know their pitfalls and shortcomings. I liken those tools as similar to a knife. A knife is sharp and not for little kids or people inclined to clumsiness. Yet, a skilled Chef can wield a knife and produce some great outcomes.

I prefer to master the available tools and wield them in such a way as to enhance my life while avoiding the nicks and cuts a less skilled operator would most likely inflict.

At the risk of being taken the wrong way - I would encourage you to understand just what exactly it's doing to people even if you "dont go there"

It's not just that it's a waste of time, anxiety, etc. It's a force that is maliciously creating personal - non shared alternate realities for people. It's part of what is ripping this country apart.

EXCELLENT interview here on what "social media" is doing.

It's important to realize it is not *just* facebook and twitter, youtube, google, etc all contribute in some way.

I'm 61. My brother, ten years older than I, bemoans that I won't do BookFace again. RWNJ's drove me right out of there back when they were posting horrible, racist memes of President Obama. I asked them to please stop. Worst mistake I ever made on the intertubes.
Nice, safe, sensible D.U..

so there was no way I was signing up for that.

I signed up for Twitter only because it can be interesting when there's a major world story going on, like the uprising in Iran or the Haiti earthquake. Otherwise, I leave it for the twits and teenagers.

I've managed to ignore Instagram, too.

For years, I felt like Cassandra prophesying societal doom because of social media but it seems the tide is turning just a bit lately.

The world would be a better, happier place if I were made benevolent supreme emperor of the universe and everyone listened to me.
