(15,006 posts)Reportedly, toward the end of his life, Robert had to wear leg braces in order to walk. An abscess from the poorly-fitted braces contributed to his death.

He taught us to enjoy everybody...my first boyfriend was black...we were 4 or 5 but we were in love!

I don't know who the hell it was we saw, but in was in Alton & he was really tall with a cane & somehow in my mind that's always who it was. Couldn't have been though.

(63,221 posts)You were very lucky. I wish you had more of those conversations as well, just so you could have known him better.
But it seems like you inherited the best of him. Most of all, his compassion for other human beings.

(7,341 posts)A gentle man outside the wrestling ring who constantly suffered from chronic pain, struggled in a world not built for him, and was being mocked and ridiculed everywhere he went. That really surprised me who in their right mind would bully such a huge strong man? He constantly drank a lot to dull the physical and emotional pain. Fellow wrestler Jake "The Snake" Roberts said he once saw him go through 70 beers in one night.
Wadlow had to suffer through an era that had very little tolerance for people outside the physical and social norm. When bullying and body shaming was normal casual conversation.
