Movie recommendations?

Son and I plan to watch movies on new year's day, but are still trying to decide what we want to see. It can be a challenge to find something we both like (I'm old as dirt, he's early 20s). We generally do best with comedies - he even enjoys watching old classics with me, such as Airplane and Holy Grail

We both try to keep an open mind. His idea of a perfect movie is Pacific Rim, while mine would run more toward a romance or something like V for Vendetta. We recently watched the trilogy of Star Wars trilogies, and agreed completely that the original three are still the best by far.

What would you recommend for our viewing pleasure?

...snip...

Wonder Woman 1984 will be technically streaming free on HBO Max, but that doesn’t mean the movie will be 100% free — or that you’ll be able to stream it forever. When the movie is released on Christmas Day, it will only be available on HBO Max for 31 days, until January 25; at which point it will stay in theaters, then later head to VOD.

Additionally, you’re probably — maybe — going to have to pay for HBO Max. The streaming service has a free trial available for new users, meaning if you’ve never subscribed to HBO Max, or only subscribed to HBO Now, you may be able to snag 7 days free. Start on December 24 in that case and you should be set.

But if you don’t qualify for that free trial, or aren’t on a service that provides HBO Max free, you’ll need to sign up directly for $14.99 a month. That’s more than the average movie ticket price of $9.37, but also the people coughing on you are probably family members, so probably a lot safer. Who can put a price on safety? I can, it’s $5.72.

If you both love the original Star Wars, I have been told by several different people that The Mandalorian really captures the 'feel' of the original trilogy far and away better than any of the sequels/prequels, although I haven't seen it myself yet.

My kid bought V-bucks on his Fortnite account and got 2 months free of Disney Plus. I think the special offer may still be good through today.

There are 2 seasons. We watched 1 or 2 episodes a night over the holidays. We watched the final episode last night. Then, we found a special extra behind the scenes series, which is about the directors (different famous directors for different episodes) and the making of the series.

Caution: Don’t read anything about the series online, because there will be spoilers!

Don't know if a 20 year old would. There is always Ford v Ferrari, or Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, and you could talk about Charles Manson. Funny the comedy is from the 40's.

Believe it's on Netflix by subscription and can be bought on Prime.

Every episode is like a mini-movie (usually around 1:20 long) and it's a fantastic series.

A few other random movie suggestions:
12 Monkeys (original with Bruce and Brad, one o' my all time faves)
Midnight Run (De Niro and Grodin, with Yaphet Kotto, Joe Pantoliano & Dennis Farina, a comedy classic)
Minority Report (Spielberg-directed based on a Philip K. Dick story, great movie)
Rob Roy (Neeson, Jessica Lange, John Hurt, Tim Roth, and Bryan Cox ... it's an unbelievably good movie you've probably never seen)
A Fish Called Wanda

The JJ Abrams-led reboot of Star Trek is like WAY better than either 1-3 or 7-9 of the Star Wars reboots. There's 3 of those and they're all solid.

Super funny, but can hand you a bit of dark humor. Johnny Depp played Hunter Thompson pretty darn well, though

Buckaroo Bonzai is one of my all time favorites. (Peter Weller, Ellen Barkin, John Lithgow (totally hysterical!), Jeff Goldblum, and Christopher Lloyd)

Of course, The Princess Bride (Cary Ewels, Robin Wright, Mandy Patinkin, Billy Crystal)

Cowboys and Aliens (Daniel Craig, Harrison Ford)

Benny & Joon, another all time fave. (Johnny Depp, Aidan Quinn, Mary Stuart Masterson)

Galaxy Quest (Tim Allen, Sigourney Weaver, Alan Rickman).

On Amazon prime, it was better than I thought and the way they show each character on each new episode made you care for them.

So, I'm probably not much help in that department.

I would recommend all the James Bond, the Bourne and Mission Impossible trilogies. Lots of action in all, some romance in a few.
