The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsPlease consider making it easier to include images in our posts.
I'm not sure if this is the right place to bring this up.
But I would like to put it out there, that if there is any one single thing that could improve DU tremendously, in my opinion it would be to make it easier to include images in our posts.
as we all know, if you have a photo or image you want to include, you have to find another web host to upload the photo and link to it from within your post. while this is fairly easy and routine for some people, it requires a significant amount of effort and there are a lot of people who don't know how to do it. Even though I have my own websites where I can fairly easily upload my photos, it requires me to open another program (FTP), upload, get the link, paste it in my post, preview to see how it looks, if it's not a good size, i have to start over again. and I can only do this from my PC. if I want to do it from my phone, it's just not worth the effort.
Images are very powerful. as it is, this extra step which is tedious for some and impossible for others, prevents images from being posted. Some/many of these images could be very powerful in getting a point across. Some of the images would be copied and pasted and spread further beyond DU (in a good way).
I believe DU could be even more powerful and useful than it is already, if it were easier to include images in our posts.
Virtually everyother discussion forum i use has an easy tool for uploading images right into a post. some (like facebook) enable you to just copy and paste an image into a post, without even uploading. these tools make the forums/websites more powerful.
I've been on DU for a long time. I appreciate everything it does. I know the admins work hard. I'm just putting it out there. Please give this some consideration. I think it's worth discussing. If there is a cost for more hard drive space or implementation, perhaps a fundraising drive could pay for it. I would kick in a few bucks.
please rec this if you agree.
thanks for listening. peace.

(7,947 posts)I just tried yesterday, had a link to a photobucket, and it didn't work. I've never figured out how to reliably get an image in.
I also appreciate all the work the admins do, and I like the interface as it's easy to read and respond and see all the topics.

(3,131 posts)Text and links take a lot less space.
Others helped me figure out how to share from Flickr. Basically I had to get the bbcode version of the link rather than the html version. There was a tab for that after hitting the up arrow share.
Maybe a post that describes how to do it on a few apps would help.

That's because, like you, I have my own website, and I just put the pictures and videos there, and then link to them. It's not really a lot of work (for me anyway), but I do agree that using your phone to do it isn't as easy.
For example (the following link is to the gif below--remove spaces if you want to use it):

(5,581 posts)Go to https://imgur.com/upload and click on "New post"
If photo is on your computer click on "Choose Photo/Video" and upload to Imgur.
If photo is on web right click on photo and copy its address/properties/location/URL and paste to "Paste image or URL" for upload.
Allow a minute or two for photo to embed into Imgur then right click on photo and copy Imgur address. (Do NOT click on "Copy link".)
Paste Imgur address ending in "png" or "jpg" to your post.

(10,086 posts)how about put a tool in the DU that sends a file to IMGUR and loads the URL into your post?
now that would be nifty
Kick in to the DU tip jar?
This week we're running a special pop-up mini fund drive. From Monday through Friday we're going ad-free for all registered members, and we're asking you to kick in to the DU tip jar to support the site and keep us financially healthy.
As a bonus, making a contribution will allow you to leave kudos for another DU member, and at the end of the week we'll recognize the DUers who you think make this community great.
