Quick UPDATE: Bailey is still on oxygen; at the moment he is "oxygen-dependent". They think it might be pulmonary hypertension and are starting him on some medications. I looked up the condition and found that the "prognosis is guarded." THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart for all your good wishes and vibes!!!!! I'm certain they are helping.Bailey has been an absolute sweetheart for more than 13 years, but today he woke up shaking and drooling, and peed on our daughter's bed.
My husband and daughter just took him to the emergency vet, and he's staying for 48 hours for observation. He must be so frightened. He's never been away overnight, let alone hospitalized. My daughter is terrified for his sake - he's her dog. She is crying in her room now.
They don't know what's wrong yet, but one possibility is congestive heart failure; another might be cancer. They're giving him oxygen and running tests.
I feel like I've been kicked in the gut. I realize he's getting on in years, but he's still so spry and agile. He's a beautiful dog too, half Cavalier spaniel and half chihuahua; looks like a small black and white beagle. He is the cuddliest dog I've ever known. He comes to me every day for a back massage. And every time, he brings me one of his toys, as a thank you gift.
I'm writing this through tears. Our two other dogs seem worried too.
If any of you can send Bailey some good vibes, please do.
Thank you.

(15,190 posts)They might check his spleen. Our German Shepherd Dog Riley had some similar issues a few years ago. We lost him from it. Maybe if we had caught it sooner...........

(7,715 posts)He's with the vet, so that's good. Make sure you closely monitor the situation and tell the vet you're going to do so by calling regularly.
If they give you some bad news, and if it's possible, I would strongly urge you to consider a second option from a veterinary school. Our little girl was 12 when we thought we would lose her, but, on the vet's rec, we went to the state vet school, and the vet students did WONDERS.
Don't give up hope immediately if it's bad news.
All the very best.

Losing a beloved pet is so hard. Even seeing them sick is heart wrenching, You can't ask them how they're feeling, or tell them it's going to be alright. All you can do is love them.
