Hi. Thanks for helping. It's all about money. When is it not?
I have two PayPal accounts.
I start with pennies in my bank account. To PayPal acct #1, my nephew sends me a $500 loan. The transfer of the money to my bank account won't go. I want to return it so Nephew can send it to my other PayPal account (acct #2).
In acct #1, I look for a place that says "return," and I can't find one. So I refund it. Because it's a refund, the money goes back to him out of my bank account, not out of PayPal acct #1. Obviously, I didn't realize that this would happen. Now my bank account is -$500.
Nephew re-sends the loan to PayPal acct #2, this time $485 as the transaction costs him $15. I go to PayPal acct #2 to transfer the money to my bank account, and that transfer works.
My bank account is now -$15. It would be $500 if my transfer from acct #1 had worked.
Am I right: do I still have $500 cash in acct #1 that's mine? It sure feels like it; it sure looks like it: the activity page in acct #1 shows that the money is there.
I've traded messages with no less than four people at PayPal, and none of them could help. One did say, "no, there's no money there, because in trans #so-and-so you did transfer funds into your bank account." This is one of the things that makes me doubt that I'm thinking of this correctly.
Help? (I can't brain today. I have the dumb.)
(I have worked on this post for an hour and a half. Don'tcha just love ADD?)

(21,484 posts)Twice. Each time I was told that the problem is not with the bank. What does one do at that point? One can't fight with a bank, especially without ammunition--or a fully-functioning brain.
Whine. Sigh.
I appreciate whatever wisdom you can give.

(2,730 posts)But, your Paypal account is separate from your bank acct. Does that make sense vis s vis your problem?
Bertha Venation
(21,484 posts)I know they're separate . . . so separate that I can't get a simple transfer to work.

(2,570 posts)You used Pay-pal service & incurred a fee. Everything else is a null as the initial transfer was not valid / accepted.

(33,643 posts)Lets forget about the fees and multiple PP accounts as that just complicates it ...
You started with zero in your bank account and zero in paypal, right? So ...
0 starting sum
+500 1st sent by nephew in pp
= 500 total your money in pp and bank
- 500 sent back to nephew
= 0 total your money in pp and bank
+ 500 sent 2nd time by nephew
= 500 total your money in pp and bank
If you still have 0 in the bank you must still have $500 in Paypal, otherwise the 2nd $500 your nephew sent you has vanished.

(21,484 posts)Brilliant. That's exactly what I was hoping for. I couldn't articulate exactly what I needed; you nailed it. Thank you so much!

(33,643 posts)Why did he use the PP method that requires a fee the 2nd time?
That's for when you purchase something. He should've sent it as a F&F Gift both times.
Oh well.
Maybe you can gift the $485 to acct 2, so that it can be moved to the bank, as I assume that's the final outcome you need, and it's not working with acct 1?
They have different emails, right? So send yourself the money to the PP acct you need it in, to facilitate the bank move.

(21,484 posts)and I'll do that. Thanks!
Meanwhile, I actually spoke with a PP rep yesterday. For a reason she didn't know, the transfer had been blocked for security reasons. She asked me a few of those questions - have you ever been associated with the address A, B, C, or D?, etc. - and I got my money.
Once again, I do so appreciate your help, Mr. L.

(33,643 posts)Too late the get the 15 back I'd bet, but if you ever have someone send you money in the future remind them to use the Gift option, that's free.
