(63,221 posts)out at a deli so I make my own. I use either a mini baguette, sub or ciabatta roll. Then I sautee some onions (and sometimes mushrooms or peppers if you prefer, or all three) in a little bit of butter. Once the vegetables are softened, I add torn slices of very thinly sliced, lean deli-roast beef, and cook until slightly browned. Finally I add torn slices of thinly sliced deli cheese (I usually use cheddar, good American cheese, muenster, havarti or swiss - sometimes a combo) until melted.
Then I use some tongs to remove the steak mixture into the grilled roll and pack down w/ a butter knife so that it doesn't spill out everywhere. They are delicious and when you make it yourself, you know the quality is good.

(4,192 posts)have you tried Jersey Mikes or Firehouse Subs?
They are about as good as we've found from fast food.
smirkymonkey
(63,221 posts)I looked up the above places and there is only one Firehouse Subs about an hour outside of Boston, and there are 3 Jersey Mikes, which are also scattered out in the suburbs, so I have never tried them. However, thanks for the recommendation.
I would actually love to have one right now, but I don't have ingredients and the place I usually order from is closed on Sundays. You have inspired me to get the ingredients with which to make one this week though!

Description from: http://www.chicagofoodies.com/2005/09/francheezie_cam.html
There are some mythical menu items that people are either too shocked to understand or disgusted, yet intrigued. The Francheezie is one such item.
If we ever start banning food for health reasons the Francheezie will be the first to go. Its a hot dog stuffed with cheeze and wrapped in bacon As far as I can tell its only found in and around Chicago, yet is considered a mockery of the hot dog.
A good francheezie needs time to cool down. Its been fried and its pretty darn hot. You can tell because the velveeta is molten to the point of water in its fluidity. Needless to say the first bite is thoroghly revolting. But it grows on you. A gripe is that you generally are served fries no matter what and in my opinion its a necessity. You need something fried yet not unimaginably bad for you to return to earth.
You take a francheezie bite, chew and enjoy the melange of cheesy-richness, bacony-fatness and hot doggety-mystery that when combined is completely overwhelming. A quick french fry in ketchup helps bridge the chasm back to normal fried foods and that was one
bite.

(2,161 posts)The best bakery and deli in CA is Gayles in Capitola CA. Not kidding.
The dont fashion themselves a deli, but rather a rostisseria. The distinction is that you cant but say a quarter pound of sliced ham. Instead the offer European inspired baked goods and prepared foods
Their caprese panini sandwich is fantastic. Store-baked panini, tomato ( which they buy then hold until its ripe, mozzarella de buffalo (not the milk cow kind), basil(organic, grown a couple miles away) a little more of this and that. Ah! (Chefs kiss)

(1,289 posts)I know. I get outside miami airport first thing i look for is con leche. 2nd is a cuban from a stand like establishment.
Kims Kuban in Key West is like magic. It's in convenience stores & gas stations. So unassuming, but the addiction factor. I never got over it. & i lived in the keys 20 years ago now.
I figured out how to make a pretty good one lately. As in last 6 months. I say this, but my husband is best with the pork preparation. The bread matters. Flattening it w press matters. I guess im trying to recreate what you just described.
The breakfast egg sandwiches & a con leche, too. Miss that.

I also get this green olive/caper/red pepper tapenade at Whole Foods at the olive bar by the pound, or you can by the same stuff online or at some markets (made by Divina) see below. I put it on sandwiches w/ a little mayo, L & T. It's best on chicken, turkey or chicken salad sandwiches. A little goes a long way:

(63,221 posts)The key is to keep it simple and let the lobster stand out. Just a little bit of mayo and served on a top sliced hot dog roll (traditional Maine style). Some people add a little chopped celery, onion or pepper, but it's a matter of taste.
There is also the Connecticut style lobster roll which is served warm, tossed in butter on a toasted split-top hot dog bun. Sometimes the simplest preparations can be the best.

(25,563 posts)or year round heirloom (organic if possible) Tomato, and a touch of garlic powder on a country white bread.
Provolone, (regular or aged), Hellman's mayo, a touch of pepper, a touch of garlic powder, tomatoes as above, one leaf of crisp romaine lettuce on a hero, or Kaiser roll.
A BLT with same extra ingredients as above, or a triple decker w added real turkey on country white.
I've had a Monte Cristo 2x's. Once at a French style restaurant in NYC w an aunt and uncle who live in Europe.
Then with that same aunt (10+ yrs later),and one of my cousins at a restaurant within (right after we arrived) a Paris train station! Tasty!
