I remember when Pres. Carter had everyone turn down their thermostats in the winter, I can't remember what temp. He also kept the WH super cold, according to staff.

(15,526 posts)The heater rarely turns on unless outside temps are in the teens or lower. (I might be a "bad neighbor" since I'm surely a heat-parasite of the units on each side of me.)
Wearing multiple layers while indoors right now, as usual in the Winter.

(15,526 posts)... I had my mitochondrial DNA tested a few years ago and they're about the most heat-producing (inefficient) around. So my mother's distant maternal ancestry likely lived near Siberia or wherever.
It helps explain why my mother and all my siblings would be hot while our father was cold! Probably also why, despite me being a speedster as a kid, I wasn't a good distance runner.
My ex-wife also loved to cuddle in the Winter, but would jab me with an elbow in the Summer. Lol.

(19,458 posts)If I want warmer (always), I put wood in the stove. Sometimes I strive for Miami in August (without the humidity). The nice thing about the point source of heat is, if I feel chilly I can move closer and if I feel hot I can turn on the ceiling fan and store the heat in the concrete slab.
In the city it is usually 68, but may be +/- 2 degrees. The thermostat is mounted on a masonry wall that causes it to lag behind the temperature in other areas of the house.

Thankfully we have zoned heating so I can just my office and a room next door, not the entire house when I'm here working alone during the day.

(130,538 posts)It's an old, drafty house and the insulation isn't the best, so 68 can feel a bit nippy, but if I get cold I just wear more clothes, so it's pretty tolerable.

(29,407 posts)...66-68 during the day, depending on how cold it is. On really cold and really windy days, we may have to nudge to 69-70. In the greater Chicago area, we have some pretty Arctic temperatures, and some pretty ferocious windchills at times.
Whe we lived in Denver, one of my husbands friends was particularly tight with a nickel. He kept his house at 55 and wore extra sweaters to keep his heating bill low. My husband thought this sounded like a great idea. I told him that if he wanted to continue living with me, this would NOT be happening. It didnt.
I love a heating pad on my feet in the winter.

(19,381 posts)And it virtually never kicks on overnight. If we keep it 68 approaching bedtime, the house is insulated well enough to stay above 60 until the threshold changes back upwards in the morning.
We used to keep midday at 60 or even off, but because of covid we are working from home now so we set a higher lower-limit.

(16,344 posts)is always moving air around. The heating part of it kicks on now and again quietly in the background but the fan is always (also quietly) on and moving the air about. We had this furnace put in a few years back- its a multi stage- and now the former hot spots are no longer. The house is just one giant 70 degree comfort zone, no matter the level. Well, the basement is actually 3 degrees cooler. Used to be like 15 degrees cooler but we just installed a new garage door and viola! suddenly its only 3 degrees cooler than the upper two levels.
Our winter time heating bills also were dramatically reduced. Our worst winter bill approached $200 before we replaced the system and now it barely goes over $100 at the peak.

(14,315 posts)When we renovated this house we put spray foam insulation in, so we are quite warm at that temperature. We are all electric, and our total house electric bill right now is $170/month. In our previous bigger house with rolled insulation, between electric and gas we would shell out almost $300.
