1. Easy to set up
2. Scammers very rarely get caught, tried, and convicted...(very rarely, if ever)
3. Very cheap to set up
4, A certain percentage of those calls work, and the scammers make lots, and lots, and lots of money...
............and the scammers know that ahead of time...

(15,083 posts)It backfired a few months ago when I had a doc appointment. They called to confirm from a different number than what was listed, only the message didn't say they were confirming. It said they needed to talk about my appointment the next day and I should call back. But then no one was there when I called back. I kept calling and getting "office hours are from 8 to 5", no matter what time I called. I called the second number I had and was able to leave a message, but no one returned my call.
Finally my insurance company called them in the morning and was able to get through, we told them their phones were broken, and I got my appointment confirmed. There was no way I was going to drive for an hour if there was actually a problem with the appointment. I did tell the person I talked to that if I was running an office and was confirming appointments without actually saying that's what I was doing, I'd make a second call if I hadn't heard back in a few hours. I mean, really.
I know, it was a comedy of errors to be sure. Still, I will answer unknown numbers if I have an appointment or am waiting for a call from a doc's office. Lesson learned. Sometimes it's a lot less stressful to just answer the phone, put it down and waste the scammer's time while I do something else, and let them give up on their own.
