Maybe heading out to find food.

Four is unusual but is indicative of her having a very good diet and lots of nutrition in her environs. If she hadn't had enough to eat before hibernation, she would not have had the cubs. Having that many shows she has good food availability, mostly.

Is that they mate early in the year but the implantation of the fertilized egg doesn't happen right away. they give birth in the den during hibernation if their body has the nutrients to sustain them, otherwise they do not bear young during that hibernation cycle. A useful trait I wish humans had adapted to. They really are amazing.

Black bear cubs usually stay with their moms for a year, Grizzlies usually two. I used to do public outreach and ed about bears, for a couple years.
