The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsI found a Sci-Fi gem on Netflix.
It's called Space Sweepers. It's good enough to keep me from providing spoilers.
It's dystopian and it's about finding connections in a bleak world; and finding good reasons to team up with people that you think are your adversaries.
Good character development.

(22,031 posts)By the way, what're your top 3-5 SciFi movies? In no particular order, mine are:
- 2001: A Space Odyssey (brilliant on every level, also philosophical about human evolution)
- Alien (the future of space exploitation will be driven by corporate greed)
- Colossus: The Forbin Project (the dangers of Artificial Intelligence from a 1960s movie)
- Fantastic Voyage (cheesy but terrific fun and a good anatomy lesson and I don't mean Raquel Welch in a wetsuit (wink); the novelization is quite excellent)
- Star Wars (the original 1977 release without ANY updates; such terrific fun and stellar box office profits that it created a resurgence of SciFi movies)

(22,031 posts)Of course, that's the problem with "Best Of" lists. You have to omit obvious contenders.
Logan's Run is so liberal it's almost parody but it's still a wonderful film. Do I remember a scene where a young woman meets an old man (who has escaped from execution) and upon seeing his facial wrinkles, asks, "Do the cracks in your face hurt?" As a 60-something man, that makes me laugh!
Silent Running has never spoken to me. It has always felt superficial. Joni Mitchell's song, "Big Yellow Taxi" actually tells this story better. BUT, that's just my opinion. The film had effective visuals and effects.
Somehow, I missed Moon and will have to watch it. Thanks for the tip!
The Empire Strikes Back is not only one of the best sequels ever, (The Godfather-Part 2 was also most awesome!), but it was the finest of the series. The reason I chose what became known as Episode 4 is because it came first and created a monster in the entertainment industry. Episode 5 is the best of every Star Wars film/TV show/cartoon, etc.
Blade Runner was among my short list and I only eliminated it because Ridley Scott has messed with it so many times. My favorite version is called (I think) "The Director's Cut" and it's the version without Deckard's narration but BEFORE he changed the ending for the sequel.
Of course, there are other classic SciFi films that I've loved over the years so favorites lists are kind of silly.

(46,700 posts)Sci Fi for me, is what anime is for most people. It is used as a medium for several genres.
So, here is my "list":
Sci - Fi (humor)
Serenity
Galaxy Quest
Sci - Fi (Terror, Horror)
Alien
The Thing
And, because I was a child, watching at night when I should have been in bed: Island of Terror. (Probably also Day of the Triffed)
Sci-Fi Saga
Dune
Star Wars
Star Trek
Most thought provoking:
Andromeda Strain
They Live
Blade Runner
All the Planet of the Apes - I go out of my way to avoid them because I find them troubling. Not sure why.
Most Visual Fun
Avatar
Genre that I watch because it's a metaphor about a degrading social order:
Most zombie movies.
Contemporary movies that I found engaging:
A Quiet Place
Arrival
Attack the Block
Leghorn21

(25,848 posts)janitorial services on the SS Enterprise. Scenes of the cleaners in their break room, gossiping about the crew, how Pickard is a slob, the times they catch evidence that Riker has a different woman in his quarters every night. Stuff like that.
