Related: Culture Forums, Support Forumsso, a shero of mine is ruth vansickle ford.
american painter who ought to be considered the finest ever, but is nearly forgotten. that's cuz she was an epic bitch.
she and i grew up in the same house. heard stories about her from a neighbor who was there long before we were. never met her, but she had quite the impact on my life.
the house she built after that is on the nat'l register.
here's a vid about it.
more-
her bday is the day before mine.

(70,088 posts)i have several of her paintings. they are out there and pretty affordable.
got into a back and forth w a dude on ebay over the price of one. he told me he had sold 'lesser works' for that kind of money. me- dude. there are no lesser fords. if she didnt love it, she didnt sell it.
i did get it for my price. needs reframing. it's in a garish frame that just dwarfs it.
but she didnt get much for the paintings back then, either. she just wanted to travel and paint and paint and travel. the money was what made that possible.
she gave away a good many in her lifetime. one of the ones i own was given to the owner of a little grocery store in the hood. spent many nickels and dimes and happy hours in that store. bought it from the grandson.

(17,285 posts)My first purchase was 35 years ago after I started my first job after college. I had a twin bed, dresser and a beautiful piece of art. It was art or a sofa. I made the right choice and never looked back.

could do it myself. have a great, big epson photo printer.
i have gotten to know the woman who wrote this book about ruth. turns out she knew my big sisters, and came to a party or 2 at that house.

her work is so distinctive, us lovers spot them right away.
one of the works i bought, the guy i bought it from told me he spotted on in the background of a zoom city council meeting. he texted the guy, and he said-yes it is, how did you know?
guy was like- duh. when you know her work you can spot it a mile away.
