Was trapped in my car by my seatbelt

Went to a local store and pulled into a parking spot. Reached down to my left to unlatch the seatbelt and I couldn't do it. I couldn't find the release button. I was able to get the shoulder strap over and behind me so I could lean over to see what the problem was and it appeared the latch release was gone. Possibly broken off. I then figured I could lower my seat back and wiggle my way out of the lap strap. As I lowered the seat, I saw that the seatbelt release was to my right and I depressed it and freed myself.

There are some days I ought to just stay home.

(I'm thinking the ones in the 70's) used to have a 'devise' that would automatically 'strap you in' when the belt went up the front side of the door window and along to the back to hold you in. You would simply open the door and the device would go across the top and back to the front, allowing you out without having to unbuckle.
HOWEVER, one could be in physical danger of hanging by opening the door to look back to see while backing into a parking spot!!!! Yep, the belt would come up and hang you if you didn't move out of the way!

I would guess that the first 10-15 years of driving was before belts were installed in cars.
