Funeral home van with body inside stolen in north St. Louis County

ST. LOUIS COUNTY — A funeral home van with a body inside was stolen from a convenience store Thursday in North County when the driver went inside the store and left it running, police said.

Investigators were searching for a man and woman who they believe took the white cargo van about 10:30 a.m. from the QuikTrip parking lot at 12100 Lusher Road, according to St. Louis County police.

Authorities believe the van belonging to William C. Harris Funeral is in the Metro East, somewhere in the area of Godfrey. The van is a 2012 Nissan NV1500 with license plate 5MDX73. A green wreath with the letter H is displayed on the back.

It was transporting the body of a woman but police declined to say more about her. Her body has not been recovered.

Festus police find van that was stolen earlier in Spanish Lake area with body inside

FESTUS — The search for a stolen funeral home van — and the body of a woman inside — ended Friday in the sporting goods aisle of a Walmart store in Festus.

Police there arrested a man and a woman suspected of stealing the van the day before in the Spanish Lake area. Officers found the white cargo van in the store parking lot, peered inside and were glad to see what appeared to be a body.

The body was that of a woman who'd been a nursing home patient and was being transported to a crematory on Thursday by the William C. Harris Funeral Home when its driver left the van running to go inside a QuikTrip. The two suspects had tried to enter a couple of other vehicles at the convenience store before hopping in the van and driving away, authorities said.

The thieves apparently covered a lot of ground with the cargo van over a 23-hour period. Surveillance video showed two suspects with the van and gassing up in the Metro East, and police late Thursday thought the couple might be in the Godfrey area. The Walmart where the search ended is at 650 South Truman Boulevard on the border of Festus and Crystal City. That's about 45 miles south of the QuikTrip in Spanish Lake where the van was stolen.
