I'll have to watch it again, in my case free on Tubi with ads.

There's another really good movie in that vein, The Five Heartbeats. It's a fictionalized story of the rise and fall of a Motown R&B group, co-written by Robert Townsend and Keenan Ivory Wayans. It's loosely based on the lives of several well-known R&B artists at the time. The Dells were the technical advisors.

The actor who sounds like President Obama, Harry J. Lennix, is one of the Heartbeats, so it was great fun seeing him.

Like many R&B fans, I wanted them to be a real group sooo bad

I rented it on Amazon but it's available on other platforms.
