If so, what is it like? Is it relatively inexpensive? Are there jobs? I'm thinking of moving there from the city.

It's pretty close to Albany. I used to take the train up from NYC to go visit my parents in upstate NY (just north of Utica) and Schenectady was the stop after Albany/Rensselaer. I have never actually been there though. Upstate NY is really pretty though.

(63,221 posts)I agree, upstate NY is underrated. However the further upstate you go, the more MAGA it gets.

(3,843 posts)It is underrated. The air is clean and there is plenty of water. Weather is pretty good for nine months out of the year. Lots of great places for hikes or other day trips, lots of history too. New England is nearby. You should check out the Troy area too, or Rensselaer County.

Kick in to the DU tip jar?
This week we're running a special pop-up mini fund drive. From Monday through Friday we're going ad-free for all registered members, and we're asking you to kick in to the DU tip jar to support the site and keep us financially healthy.
As a bonus, making a contribution will allow you to leave kudos for another DU member, and at the end of the week we'll recognize the DUers who you think make this community great.
