Am I the only person in the world that can't stand ranch dressing?

Perhaps I watch too much YouTube, but I've noticed that so many people eat ranch on everything--they dip their fries in it, onion rings, and the absolutely most disgusting, dip a slice and/or slather it all over their pizza. Why?!? I have to stop watching it.

😱 🤢 🤮

I think I need to reevaluate my entertainment choices.

It was just a packet of seasonings. Hidden Valley Ranch. Used to mix together with mayo and buttermilk and keep it in a mayo jar in the fridge. It was quite delicious!

Now, I'm more of a balsamic vinaigrette kinda girl.

We made our own salad dressings, including bleu cheese. I had to crumble the block of cheese by hand into the other ingredients - the stink stayed on my hands for days! Scented soaps, lemon juice, nothing took the smell away except time.

I have despised bleu cheese dressing ever since.

on an avocado/grapefruit/bibb lettuce salad. It's probably nostalgia because my Nana used to make it sometimes when we'd go over to their house for dinner on Saturday nights when I was a kid. She'd place strips of ripe avocado and sections of pink grapefruit (minus the membrane) on a bed of bibb lettuce then drizzle a little Russian dressing on it. It was the best. A friend sent some Harry & David deluxe avocados to me as a gift and I made that salad with one of them. It was still awesome. That smooth avocado and tart grapefruit combined with that buttery bibb lettuce and slightly sweet-yet-tangy dressing is a winning combination.

(which is hydrophobic, i.e. oil/fat-soluble) so the heat doesn't linger too long afterwards. Indian cooks know to serve yogurt with their hot & spicy dishes for the same reason. Guacamole is also high in fat, so makes a good follow-up to overly spicy food.

As in, they don’t really like the taste of what they are eating so they drown it in ranch.
Like how little kids put ketchup on everything, or how an adult who eats well done steak with ketchup doesn’t actually like the taste of steak.

I like ranch on a salad when having pizza and salad, and on bacon cheddar fries.

The package of Hidden valley is ok if you use less mayo, sour cream instead of buttermilk. A little fresh lemon juice doesn't hurt.

I remember wrenching in disgust back in the early 80’s when ranch on pizza was all the rage in California. Thankfully that trend is dead, although I did see some rednecks in Arizona indulging in ranch with a side of pizza a couple years ago. It’s right up there on the foul meter with ketchup on steak and hotdogs.

Mukbang

Online audiovisual broadcast in which a host eats large amounts of foods while interacting with their audience

A mukbang is an online audiovisual broadcast in which a host consumes large quantities of food while interacting with the audience. It became popular in South Korea in 2010, and since then has become a huge worldwide trend. Varieties of foods, ranging from pizza to noodles, are consumed in front of a camera. A mukbang is usually prerecorded or streamed live through a webcast on streaming platforms.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mukbang

I wish YouTube would police them more because there are a few super morbidly obese people who are committing slow suicide and have monetized their eating disorder/lack of willpower, whichever it is. It really is like watching a guy shoot up heroin on camera or drinking him/herself to death. They have quit their jobs in the real world to do nothing but eat on camera. For this, they can make thousands of dollars a month through ad revenues and feeders* paying them to eat. It's really disturbing and dark.

*Feederism: Feederism is an umbrella term for different kinds of sexual attraction. The fetish includes fat fetishes, feeding, weight gain, bloating, inflating and padding.

Sun Feb 28, 2021, 04:31 AM
Feb 2021

I don't think I've ever had ranch dressing, but I love mayonnaise. What I can't stand is ketchup. Yuck. I love tomatoes, but I hate ketchup. In Belgium they put mayonnaise on French fries instead of ketchup. When I was a kid we used to eat mayonnaise sandwiches all the time. Slather a gob of mayonnaise between two slices of bread and chow down. Now I have to have more than just mayonnaise on that sandwich, at least mayonnaise and mustard and some kind of sliced meat and also hopefully some sliced cheese, but if you put ketchup on it I absolutely WILL NOT eat it. On salads I like oil and vinegar dressing, or some kind of vinaigrette dressing. Thousand island is okay, too.

Cheaper, better.

M.F.K. Fisher on having to write about dips:

"Finally I found myself outlining a publishable credo of protest, based on the cold facts that I had never made a dip in my life, had never in my life tasted a dip ... and was sure that never would I either make or taste a dip. I felt very firm and relieved about it, and turned my back strongly upon several new cookbooks with long chapters devoted to dips of varying extravagance. ... Dips are messy. The idea of all kinds of wafers and chips and vegetables and plastic skewers dabbling in a common bowl, and often breaking off in it, was repugnant. Down, down to hell itself, I said, with dips."

Double dipping is always a problem.
