(34,367 posts)No wonder they call it Oz.
(Except for the extremely poisonous spiders, snakes, and aggressive river crocs.)

(790 posts)Among my favorites: wombats, duck-billed platypus, bats, koalas, kakapo (flightless parrot), Huntsman spider. Yes, there are bats in the U.S. In fact, the largest colony of bats in the world can be found in the Bracken Cave in Texas. But I follow the bat carers, from Australia, on social media who care for bats who have been injured or lost when their moms have died or were severely injured. I learned a great deal about bats from them. The duck-billed platypus is the only mammal that lays eggs. Not to be played with, though. They've got a sharp barb that can deliver profoundly painful venom. The Huntsman is good to have around if you've got an insect problem in the house. The only problem could be its size, particularly for arachnophobes. Their circumference is about the size of a dinner plate. For that they get their own room. The opossum, America's only marsupial, is an indication that Australia was once connected geographically to South America/Antarctica. (Gondwana)
