A HERETIC I AM

I'm in Medford, Oregon. I drove up to Crater Lake. Un Bloody Real. (Video added)

This is from the southern rim. The water was so flat calm, the distant rim was a perfect mirror. This is about 7000’ altitude, and the water is over 1000’ below me.

I have a lot more, and am heading back up before dawn to get a Timelapse of the sunrise

What an incredible spectacle

By the way, I realize that doesn’t look real, but I promise you, it is a real photograph, taken about 4:30 or so Pacific time, today, Sunday, February 28, 2021, on my iPhone 8

It was breathtaking. It was truly hard to discern where the water ended and the land began, the water was so flat calm. Utterly gorgeous.

Here’s the video I took using my tripod

The world is too big to see everything yourself, even with infinite resources, never mind the resources of most of us plebs.

But if you have a chance to see Crater Lake, take it, any time of year. It is awesome.

..I worked for the Union Pacific Railroad in the 90s and early 2000s. Though I resided in St. Louis, MO, I handled through-freight through Portland, OR from my desk from 1990 -1992 before being promoted to the help-desk.
A colleague told me about crater lake, and I have since always wanted to go there.

I have never been to the Pacific North West. I'd like top see Bridal Veil, too. I used to check RR cameras at that location and would sometime see the falls in the background.

Bucket list.

My wife, two daughters, and myself stayed at a resort down in Klamath Falls for a few days and stopped off at the lake on our way back to Washington. We took one of the tour trolleys, which made the visit even more awesome. Next time, we'll actually take the hike down to the shore and maybe the boat tour. Definitely worth visiting if you get the chance.

My wife and I visited Crater Lake for the first (but not last time) on our 6th wedding anniversary. It was June 6th and snowing like a sonuvagun. We took our Christmas Card photo outside of the lodge.

Since then, we've been many times. And in normal times (I.e. non-Covid) I would typically drive past that area six (or more) times a year, preferring to get to Los Angeles via Klamath Falls, Reno, and Bishop rather than Sacramento and Grapevine.

When I was there, I was fortunate enough to get a room at the Crater Lake Lodge, back then, at least, the only lodge permitted by the Park Service, and we had a room overlooking the lake. I haven‘t been back since, but Crater Lake is a place you never forget once you have seen it.

But no problem, really.

Just now waking up to head back up there and shoot the sunrise. I’m a little more concerned because any water on the road will have frozen, but it should be fine. I’m just going to take it easy

That first sight of it when the car crests the hill and your eyes adjust to what they are seeing and your jaw hits the floor - stunningly beautiful. That iridescent blue just smacks your retinas in the most satisfying fashion.

And then to go down to the water, get out on the dock and throw a stone into it and watch as it falls through the completely transparent water - it will be visible until it’s too small to see even were there only air between you and it.

Such an amazing accident of geology. So glad you got to see it in all its splendor! Thanks for the excellent images.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I seem to remember the Park Ranger saying that the only way the crater gets it's water is via snow and rain. It looses water thru evaporation. There are not streams or rivers that feed it. Also they sent a visual marker down and it was still visible over 100' down.. Very clear water.. bucket list checked..

That is to say, it’s a caldera, so any stream is going to start at the top of the rim.

I’m going to give this another 30 minutes and then head back to town.

It was about 20 F when I got here. It’s warming up now that the sun is up, but still windy.
