The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsI had a nasty scene this afternoon, and I'm not sure I acted all that well.
What do you think?
She pushes onto the elevator, with another woman in tow, clearly exceeding the mandated passenger load. She was early 70s, I guess and the woman in tow looked older.
I pointed this out to her and she says "She has to come with me." I said, "No, she doesn't. You could both wait for the next one. You know, like the rules say."
"Oh, shut up."
"Shut up??? On top of this, you're not wearing a mask in public."
(can't remember what she said to this - I was getting pretty annoyed with her)
"Oh, so you just get to go around spreading disease and death if you feel like it."
Angrily puts on mask, then mutters "Oh, fuck off."
"EXCUSE ME???"
Elevator reaches my level, and I want to get off.
"Please let me off the elevator."
"If you don't talk nice to me, you're not getting off."
"Oh, really? Well, your cart is certainly going off. Your choice after that."
She grumbles, then moves to give me just enough room to get off, and even then, our carts collided. I don't know what she said after that, because I'd about reached my limit of patience and love for my fellow man. Or woman, as it were.
I'm afraid that, at that point, I succumbed to my baser instincts and loudly told her to go do something unnatural. I really don't think the other 3 late middle aged women (apart from this bitch-on-wheels and her silent friend) on the elevator appreciated our exchange much, and I felt bad about that.
But God damn! F'ing freepers in Victoria BC? F that!

(46,317 posts)And I see nothing wrong with it, since you didn't slug her.
You didnt batter her. You did fine. You actually got her to wear a mask. Nothing to be ashamed of.

(11,155 posts)in the OP. Must be just the natural need to belittle people by calling them what the name caller thinks is a derogatory name! You know like Uncle Tom, Charlie Chan, or Karen!

(14,144 posts)Sorry about our uncouth example down here. Anti social behavior and rudeness has been normalized.

(34,372 posts)Fortunately, in my little area of the world, everybody seems to be following Governor Whitmer's & Michigan Department of Health advice by masking up and social distancing without complaints.
Seeing videos of them online is bad enough. I'd probably say and do something similar to you. Their arrogance and willful ignorance are just too much to take.

(2,203 posts)Too bad you didn't think to push the button to close the doors on her. I might have pushed my cart out and said fuckit and wait for the next one if there was no other escape from this jerk.
Listen, I am known to walk through a store (on the rare case I go in) or in a line with my arms outstretched waving them around and just say 'gimme 6 ft please!!!' as people need to be corralled like the stupid (or maybe forgetful, I'll give 'em that) creatures they are, but she was a straight up jerk. You tried, she failed. Sad world we are confronted with selfish jerks.

...my office is located are very small - about the size of a double bed mattress. There are stick on footprints in each of the 4 corners, and the maximum occupancy is 4, which is 3 too many for me, as there is no social distancing possible in that small a space.
If Im in it and someone else wants to get in, I get off, and if the door opens while Im waiting, and someone else is already in there, I wait.

They have people like that there?
Victoria is my liberal getaway from the often-uncivil US. I live in liberal Western Washington, and there are still too many right-wingers here for my comfort.
In pre-COVID-19 days, I use to count on my twice yearly visits to lovely Victoria.
Guess I need to be on the lookout now for Canadian Karens
