During WWII, the US Navy ships reported a lot of very strange mirage type events in the cold waters around the Northern Japanese isles. One frequent type sighting were ships that were many miles away, over the horizon, appearing to be sailing by close at hand. The American ships would chase the phantoms and they would suddenly disappear. You could understand the phenomenon if it happened on British ships, but American ships were dry.....
