(17,992 posts)Lying out on the sun porch a squirrel came cheekily by. She raised her head while everyone was waiting for her to race off. Watched the squirrel until it was past her, then went Aroof! Squirrel shot off.

(28,127 posts)Both my hubby & I have had serious to-the-hospital bites requiring stitches and tetanus shots but we love our dogs like ....well, like crazy, as I said.
Yet neither of us would call dogs "those things." Some misbehave because they've not had proper training.
(And my kitties once shat on carpeting because their litter box had gotten too dirty. We still loved them too.)

(5,944 posts)They inflict their dog hobby on the rest of us.
They're in the park - off the leash. They're on the baseball field - where they can't even legally be - off the leash. The owners are then yelling, they're clapping, they're sending people to the hospital with bites.
90 percent of dog owners are total scofflaws. Dog shit bags dropped everywhere in the woods.
I'm starting to despise this horrible dog fad, the dogs and their selfish owners who insist on inflicting their dog hobby on everybody else with zero regard for the rules.

(28,127 posts)You must live in a horrible area.
All my neighbors carry bags & pick up their poop.
Do you not realize most DU pet owners love our dogs like family members?!
I feel sorry for you.

(5,944 posts)they dominate areas, and diminish the quality of life for those around them. Our apartment complex started (idiotically) allowing dogs and the quality of life just went downhill fast. The grass is now a muddy wasteland from the nasty piss. They fight and the owners yell. The young owners go party and leave the dogs to bark and howl for hours on end. Talk about raising you blood pressure. It's fucking low life nasty around here now that dogs are allowed.
Now they want to bring them into every store and restaurant. Gross. They're so pushy, like they're gods gift because they have a pet hobby. Get a pet you don't have to inflict on other people. I'm sick of it.
They don't belong in an urban environment, period.

(5,944 posts)Dog numbers have skyrocketed lately. It's become a real problem. Started with the Millennials around 2010 and now into the next generation. Every college kid has to have one now. It's thoroughly obnoxious.

(58 posts)I hope you never need a seeing eye dog or a service dog for any reason. I really don't appreciate the 'tude.
I hope you are being factitious.

(115,878 posts)For most of us, our dogs (and cats) are loved family members, not hobbies. In my neighborhood where I walk every day I see dozens of dogs being walked, and every person I see carries bags and picks up after them and I do not see poop anywhere. Yes, I suppose there are some people who don't pick up after their dogs, but that's a tiny minority. You are not going to make a lot of friends here.

why would someone bother to pick up dog shit then just throw it down? I mean, skip a step and just leave it. more biodegradable and no gross handling.

(5,944 posts)i.e. you force me to bag this up so I'll just accidently drop it right on the ground "oops!"
I've seen it in every park starting several years ago.

I agree that people should be responsible for their pets, in more ways than one. Dogs that bite people should definitely be leashed, and probably muzzled if they are going to be walked in public.
But as others have said, most of us here consider our dogs to be beloved family members. And as we all know, there are far more people that should be leashed, with someone taking responsibility for them.

(5,944 posts)For some it's a fashion statement. You just didn't have every last college kid having to have a dog in years past. Now it's a must. Started with the Millennials a few years back, now it's into the next generation. And they almost all - 80-90 percent - unleash their dogs in the park. There is simply zero enforcement. They know they won't get a ticket, so they do it.
It's becoming a real problem. I've been attacked many times in the park by dogs, and now two days ago I was bitten by a nasty little lap dog that wasn't even off the leash- the owner just let the dog into my space, and it lashed out like a rattlesnake and got me on the back of the calf.
Other hobbies just don't end up with this violent horrible environment for everybody else.

(22,172 posts)Biting dogs are unacceptable. But to lump all dog owners under the same banner is like saying every car owner doesn't care if they crash into someone else.

(5,944 posts)Luckily the teeth didn't penetrate the sturdy trousers I was wearing so I just ended up with a nasty bruise and scrape, no puncture.
It's just indicative of the "peak dog" period that we're in right now coupled with zero enforcement and a serious lack of boundaries on the part of a huge percentage of dog owners. And apartment landlords trying to cater to the latest trends amongst the youth.
They don't belong in closely packed apartment complexes. I don't need anybody shitting their dog right outside my kitchen window every day, but there they they are: "Go potty" "Go potty GOOD GIRRRRRRRRLLLL!!!!! crinkle crinkle crinkle - 1 foot from my kitchen window - gross. No boundaries for these people. There is a small number of law abiding, responsible owners but they are a small cohort indeed.
