For anyone who wants to see some cool drone footage of the volcano eruption in Iceland

The link, below, will take you to several stunning videos.

Small Eruption – Big Attraction: Videos

The volcanic eruption on the Reykjanes peninsula, Southwest Iceland, continues. It started shortly before 9:30 pm last night and remains very small – so small, in fact, that when Páll Einarsson, geophysicist and professor emeritus, is asked by mbl.is whether it will be named after the valley Geldingadalur, where it started, he responds, “That is likely, but it is so small that I’m not even sure it will be given a name.” He calls it among the smallest ones in history.

The fissure is 180 meters long, with several vents, through which the lava emits.

“This [lava] flows very slowly; the series of events is very slow,” Páll states. “But because this is occurring in a valley, it is not a very good idea for people to be down there, due to the risk from gases, because the gas has a tendency to accumulate in hollows.”

“While this eruption is ongoing,” he adds, “it is not likely that another eruption will begin elsewhere. But we have to take into account that this is part of a much bigger series of events. There is nothing that indicates this activity is about to be over. Therefore, soon or at some point, another eruption could start or a new magma dyke could form.”

Iceland has reopened their borders for vaccinated travelers so my wife and are are joining some friends for a trip there in July.

We love to travel and this past year has been frustrating, to say the least.

And, in July you will have almost 24 hours of daylight. I landed there on the Summer Solstice. Fortunately the barracks had light blocking curtains. Our softball teams used to play at midnight!

I'm hopeful I'll get to return, some day. I've been craving a Pylsa (Icelandic hot dog) for decades, now. Meanwhile, I hope you take and post lots of photos!

Got lucky. There was a high KP-index and mostly clear weather one night. Took a Greyline tour bus out west of Reykjavik and had an hour of shimmering green, pink, violet curtains of light. Got back around 6:00 in the morning.

Mostly we went to see puffins. The visit to Vigur Island (northwest Iceland) was great, but watch out for the Arctic terns.

Then out of Reykjavik, we took a boat tour out to a different island, didn't land but the puffins were all over the place.

Thanks for sharing them!

Our friends who invited us are great lovers of Iceland. They made an award-winning documentary about the many local horses titled "Tales of Iceland." Also, my wife did her archeological dig in Iceland so it's time for me to go, too.
