Role reversals

My mother needs a new car. A sibling is offering to pay up to $x, with the consideration of a few manufacturers (Toyota, Honda, basically reliable ones).

I feel like I’m arguing with my 16 yo son (who is now 22) on his first car when I’m talking to her. She wants a small sports car (think Mercedes), and she’s found one with high mileage that she thinks is perfect. Sibling is noping that one, and I’m noping right behind them.

She’s in her early 80s. If she wants a high end sports car then she should buy herself one. But honestly, she can’t. We already bought a house for her to live in, and my siblings and I pay the house payment each month. She hits up a food bank each month. We send stuff (gift cards to grocery stores, cash) to her periodically.

I’m just so exhausted from the conversations and her trying to play us against each other.

(For the record, my youngest got a car after his freshman year of college, not when he was 16. I told him I’ll buy $x amount of a car and he’d have to find it. He found two, we test drove them together and he made his choice. I argued for the other one but he decided on his choice and it was fine. But they were both Subarus so it didn’t really matter to me.)

Is it the cost of the car or the mileage that is the problem? Eko Mar 2021 #4

Got one she'd love and cheap, with your DU discount.

2001 Mercedes SLK 340, Hard top convertible with a 6 speed stick. Just under 60K miles.

Only problem, for me anyway, is you have to start or drive it about every other day or the battery goes to dead to start it. I have a tickle charger you can up to it if she's not going to drive it every day.

$5K for you.
