Is this like twitter, social networking with celebrities? I feel like I would be violating his privacy if I ask to friend him.

You probably are friends with other people who are friends with him. If he's got a big number of friends, like a few thousand, it's probably okay - I'm friends with a lot of authors, they use FB as promotion and to interact with fans. The ones that only have a couple hundred fans, though, those accounts are basically personal, and you'll likely not get accepted.
