Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsI replaced all of the hinges and rollers on my garage door. (Instructional video added)
The door is about 30 years old, but it is still in good shape. However, the old hinges and rollers were covered with grease...dusty grease.
I replaced all of the hinges with a heavier gauge version, and I replaced the old clackety metal rollers with nylon rollers which are much quieter.
I also took this opportunity to clean out the tracks with brake cleaner, blow the dust off the springs, clean the door, etc.
Each row of hinges are numbered sequentially as you move up from the top of the bottom panel 1,2,3,4 because the hinge barrels have different offsets when measured from the hinge plate.
The top and bottom rollers on each side are not contained within movable hinges, but rather, they are held in place with brackets.
When doing the bottom side rollers, there is a procedure that must be followed in order for you to not be killed. There is a cable that is attached to the edge of the bottom hinge brackets. When the door is in the closed position, this cable stretches out the garage door springs. Don't even think about doing anything with the bottom rollers unless the door is in the fully opened position. By fully opening the door, the cable relaxes and removes the tension from the springs. After you raise the door to work on the bottom rollers, you have to fiddle around with the tracks to get the new rollers mounted. YouTube has lot of videos on how to do this. If you try to remove the bottom hinge bracket while the door is down and the strings are stretched, you will most likely die from getting hit by the spring and/or cable, so don't so that.
EDIT: Here's a video.
I'm posting this because I know that about 95% of DU was wondering "How the fuck do you change your garage door hinges and rollers without getting dead"? For you other 5%, just ignore this post and go back to your knitting or scrap-booking or gluing popsicle sticks together to make birdhouses or whatever it is that you do.

(23,061 posts)If you have the owners manual for the opener (or if you can find one online), it will tell you how to adjust the settings.
I looked at mine briefly in case what I did to the door affected the travel limits.
Here's a video on how to adjust one particular brand of opener. Personally, I know absolutely nothing about garage door openers, so I would call a pro.
Good luck!
PS...just reread your post. Looks like someone will fix it, but you just need to get your car out? Maybe adjusting the opener might help with that, but I'm not sure...
