(43,062 posts)Men went to work, women stayed home, housewives were the norm. Yes, they wore long white gloves and went to church, and dress emulated the First Lady. It was an orderly society. Idyllic in a sense, too much so. There were stresses beneath the surface and the rest of the 60's bubbled with them. In some ways it's never been the same. Or maybe the brief periods of peace and calm are an occasional midsummer's night's dream.
Great find, thanks for the OP.

(9,678 posts)and it was a joke, even drunk driving. Discipline was actually abuse, and accepted. Teachers were abusive to students, especially the ones that needed help. People of color were discriminated against in many ways and this too was accepted. Other races were laughed at on TV and radio. Sorry for trying to add history. Hard to not remember but best not to forget. Be good to all and it will come back to you.
Happy Easter all.

Graph at that article compares alcohol consumption from the 1920s to the present. !960s alcohol consumption was lighter than the 1980s and than today.

(9,664 posts)That was the fancy peoples life.
My dad was a small business owner and both my mom and grandma worked full time, but we still needed to scrimp.
However, the ladies did wear hats and gloves to church and important social events.

(90,564 posts)...which is where they were pictured on Easter Sunday. They look like they are standing in front of a small chapel Hyannis Port?
Barring a few details, this was standard dress for women attending church in the 1960s in the US. What Im saying is you could put that whole outfit together on a budget, including the little lace thing standing in for a hat at Catholic church.
Some things are sheerly regional, some things are generational, and some things are only worn for dress-up. But Jackie Kennedys outfits were simple and classic, which is why women emulated her.
