I grew up, so the first time I saw one when I was a kid, I was frightened. I heard it first, "buzzing" near me. When I looked, I thought it was a gigantic bee and ran away.

a ruby throated hummingbird. It was summer in our yard in Erie, PA. I told my parents and my father, who lived for his yard and garden, and observed many natural creatures, told me what it was. Showed me a picture in our encyclopedia and I recognized the spot of red and the long bill.

I saw it, or another like it, again that summer. It did the hover bit and flew in all directions, as hummingbirds do, among the flowers in our yard. Once I understood what it was, I was fascinated by it.

Someone apparently cut the blossom off & mounted it upside down, probably in some sugar water, for the hummingbirds.

This is exactly what they look like on our banana trees:

In fact, I've never seen it. I always thought they were too ADHD to rest.

Something else I'd never seen a hummingbird do - feed on the ground. There was one in our back yard doing that a couple of weeks ago. We grow a lot of flowers, fruits and vegetables, and have a couple of different kinds of feeders, so we get quite a variety of birds.
