It was the only kitten kept by my parents after the mother, a Calico, had a litter. (Homes were found for all the others, and then the mother cat was fixed.)
The mother kept abandoning the black kitten, so we didn't even know about it until hearing some squeaks under a dresser where she gave birth. After we kept holding it against one of her teats a few times, it was like she thought, "Fine! I'll take care of it!" Lol.
The black cat seemed to be mentally slow, to be honest, but it was such a loving cat. The Calico mother was like a cat-genius in comparison, but we loved them both.

Some time at one point they were on her bed learning
to walk - she said they looked like "little drunken sailors".
