1. For many countries around the world, Sputnik is the only vaccine available

Or the only one readily available: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sputnik_V_COVID-19_vaccine

The whole issue of vaccine equity is shocking when looking at it at global level. The "western countries" (whatever that means) are exceedingly lucky to have an excess of vaccines, particularly the US. At least, Sputnik is being rolled out around the world and is much more affordable than what we have in the US.

Vaccine equity is a huge issue for many (e.g., healthcare workers): https://www.who.int/campaigns/annual-theme/year-of-health-and-care-workers-2021/vaccine-equity-declaration

2. yeah I shouldn't laugh

and I have seen US reports that it was surprisingly effective regardless of Putin's ego. this was a friend in Budapest. Apparently Orbán ordered plenty of it early, before even much testing.

and Europe is having plenty of problems despite the wealth and "westernness" with lack of product and distribution issues and all the hysteria over the Astra Zeneca problems.

3. It would appear AstraZeneca causes serious blood clots in rare cases.

So I don't think it's just hysteria.

5. there may be some association with the blood clot issues

but shutting down vaccinations for two weeks and now the appearance of dumping it on only old people (at least in Germany, my source of info) causes loss of confidence. and the US isn't the only place full of anti-vax idiots and freedumbies

Give it to people knowing 1 out of 100,000-600,000 will die?

"ROME (Reuters) - There is a link between AstraZeneca’s COVID-19 vaccine and very rare blood clots in the brain but the possible causes are still unknown, a senior official for the European Medicines Agency (EMA) said in an interview published on Tuesday."

10. People get vaccine. One in 100,000-600,000 develop very unusual blood clots.

Those clots could be deadly. What other evidence is needed?

12. um, how about what actually caused them?

the cause is not known yet. I'm not sure what you are getting at but I don't have the answers and neither does anybody else at this point. It is a problem that will eventually be solved. in the meantime it is fodder for conspiracy theories and hesitation than could REALLY be deadly for a lot more people.

4. Ironically, I think Russia is going to get a lot of goodwill
Tue Apr 6, 2021, 06:26 PM

My understanding that one of the biggest problems with Sputnik was that it had a very limited testing pool (essentially, all healthy people from Moscow), whereas many of the other vaccines had a much more geographically and healthwise diverse testing population, as well as numerically much larger. Folks smarter than me say this leads to selection bias, and it probably overstates the efficacy of Sputnik. But getting the Sputnik vaccine is far better than doing nothing at all. Is it 91% "effective"? Probably not. But is it more than 70-80% effective? Almost assuredly.

Russia was apparently far more open about sharing the vaccine than the other manufacturers, which is leading to its uptake all over the world. That's why Russia is going to get goodwill out of all of this.

I cannot believe what's happening in Europe. I heard that even Angela Merkel was fed up with how it's going there.

Thank goodness for Joe! He took a disastrous roll out and has made it work. I got my vaccine (J&J) last week, and it was almost like a party at the vaccine site. Everyone was in such a good mood, and they apologized profusely that I had to wait for the new doses to be brought out. I told them I clearly had nothing better to do, and that I appreciated so much about what the vaccine staff are doing to save us.

But once we get the US under control, we, as the restored world leader under President Biden, must do something ASAP to help the whole world. It is the right thing to do, but it also makes complete sense to end this awful pandemic, both for us and the world. This is something that the Rethuglicans cannot comprehend: even looking at it cynically, helping others actually can help us.
