His degree was in animal husbandry, which is exactly the major you should take if you want to be a military intelligence officer. Anyway, when we were slow he would teach us all about artificially inseminating cattle. I don’t think I would want to be the one who had to jack off a bull to get the necessary semen for the job, but part of his training was doing exactly that. Repeatedly.

Horses, you don’t do that to if you’re in a breeding program. Whether it’s tradition or because artificial insemination has been tried and failed, horses are inseminated the old fashioned way.

Some of the breed organizations were still a bit shy about it, last I checked. But I had mares that were inseminated with semen from German Warmblood and Quarter Horse stallions (different mares, different years). So yeah, I was there when my veterinarian jacked off her stallion. Every time they were local horses so the semen was just driven across town, then used the same day. Shipping cooled or frozen semen is a whole different thing unless the technology has improved in the last twenty years.

It's been quite a few years, but we had a 100% conception rate with AI. Some breeders have a lower rate, maybe because they tried to stretch the semen for use in more mares, or because they were using shipped semen that had been frozen - back when I last checked that had a conception rate of only about 50%.

My last foal, not AI, was born in 2016, if I remember correctly so I am not up to date on things.
