Sixty years ago today:



Yuri Alekseyevich Gagarin, a Soviet pilot and cosmonaut, became the first human to journey into outer space, achieving a major milestone in the Space Race; his capsule, Vostok 1 completed one orbit of Earth on 12 April 1961. Gagarin became an international celebrity and was awarded many medals and titles, including Hero of the Soviet Union....

Born a week before Sputnik I, I wasn't yet four when Gagarin went up. My earliest memory of a news event was watching John Glenn's launch.

he was small enough to fit in the capsule.

But I think today's commercial airplanes are based on that capsule's size
