(115,674 posts)that hardly anyone else has one - no matter how silly it might be. A handbag shaped like an airplane is awkward and clumsy and does not satisfy the essential requirements of a handbag - which are to be convenient to carry and easy to find your stuff in while large enough to accommodate said stuff. But if everybody knows that a thing is insanely expensive, rich idiots who want to be sure everyone knows they're rich will happily let themselves get ripped off by designers who know they are dealing with rich, ostentatious idiots.

(22,031 posts)Really high end handbags and purses that would be inspired by high society events. For the Kentucky Derby, the bag was shaped like a horse's head with ornamental roses on the side. For a yachting party, the bag was shaped to look like a life ring and the handles were3-pieace nylon braided rope. And so on.
The bags were very complicated and she made several trips to China where she hoped to have the bags manufactured. The problems were many. She needed hinges that were curved, (something I've never seen). The silk materials were expensive and difficult to cut into the proper patterns. There were numerous other manufacturing and distribution problems.
When she finally got some bags to market and she sold all three dozen bags she had made for $5,000 apiece. Unfortunately, she ended up losing about $50,000 because of the problems. that was the end of that endeavor!
Still, $5K for a purse? You're right, some rich people will buy anything!
