Sick with a stomach flu at 5:23 am

I swear to God I spend all of last year avoiding covid. Avoiding every other sickness and I finally succumbed to a stomach flu

Never have I ever felt pain like this in a few years. Anything that's going into my body is automatically coming out. I have no idea how I caught this.

In my ServSafe food safety certification class, I learned that illness commonly called “stomach flu” is usually food poisoning.

It could be from something you ate days ago. A lot of people just assume that it's from the last thing they ate, but that's not necessarily the case.

We used to get sick at least a few times a year, and my mom always called it the stomach flu. The entire family would be sick at the same time. I know now that it was much more likely that we had food poisoning.

It was a common practice for my mom to leave food out on the counter for hours, and sometimes all night, in case someone wanted some more after supper. Also, I don't recall her ever instructing us about cross-contamination and hand washing, so I'm sure none of us followed good practices.

As an adult I got food poisoning once when I was in my early 20s, and I didn't think I was going to live. It really took weeks to fully recover.

The threat of food poisoning is the biggest reason I don't enjoy eating in restaurants, and I'm very picky about eating anything at something like a potluck. I'm fine when I go to my kids' houses to eat because I know they follow the rules that I drilled into them their entire lives.

I was horribly ill, like the stomach flu with mild fever, that hit me 7 days after my first shot and everything was coming out both ends at the same time for a couple hours. I was miserable all day, I slept most of the day and my energy level was really low for a couple days after.

Only drink clear fluids, try to find something with electrolytes like (ugh, I now) Gatorade and sip at it. Also, If you have tea and some cooking thyme, make a cup of tea and add a quarter to half a teaspoon of thyme to it and just sip at that to help you stop vomiting.

Hope that's all it is.

There is nothing worse! I can deal with most other kinds of pain, but nausea and vomiting are the absolute worst. I hope you recover soon.

Do you have any ginger tea that you could sip on? That usually helps with the stomach upset and nausea. There is also an OTC medication called Nauzene. You can find it in most pharmacies and it works pretty well

Take care and feel better!

Norovirus is one of the many causes of food-borne illness, aka food poisoning.. Others include salmonella, E. coli, botulism, listeria, etc. https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/food-poisoning/symptoms-causes/syc-20356230

It does sound like food poisoning, no fun indeed. My last bout was 10 years ago. Was at a meeting an hour and a half drive time from home. They brought in a boxed lunch, I picked the roast beef sandwich. Should’ve had the fish.

Three hours later it struck with a vengeance. Was still driving and was lucky to have an off ramp to pull over. Came very close to making a horrible mess in the car.

It's spread through contaminated food or surfaces. But it usually lasts only a few days, and at least it's not covid.

I’m not just nit-picking. The misunderstanding regarding gastritis and what some people call stomach flu leads people to decline their yearly influenza immunization.

I’ll encourage a patient to get their flu shot, and they’ll say “The flu shot gave me the flu.”

I ask what their symptoms were.

“Nausea and vomiting.”

Influenza is respiratory in nature. What they had was gastritis, but they thought they got it from the vaccine.

I set them straight and they usually go on to get immunized against the real flu.

But it’s important to public health not to confuse patients with regard to what is or is not the flu.

I have patients telling me they had the flu and then declining the influenza immunization.

They’re confused by the word “flu” which is a respiratory illness, but they’re having digestive symptoms. I don’t want patients declining vaccines at all and especially not over misinformation.

is a social "nicety" and in a clinical setting incorrect as to what was really going on.

I think your situation is different in that way. What you tell me is that there is a real misunderstanding of what influenza is.
