My family had one like this (another brand, I think) in the '70's. Our dog's metal-link collar could change the channel in unpredictable ways!

(5,946 posts)My Grandma had that exact model. It operated by making annoying metallic sounds that the TV set would hear. Clink! Dink! The illuminated mechanical channel-selector dial on the set would go spinning around, chunka-chunka-chunka-chunka!
It took skill and timing to click the button again at the right time to get the spinning dial to stop on the right channel. If you were too late, than around we go again for another try! Clink! Dink! Chunka-chunka-chunka-chunka!

(972 posts)They worked on tones just above the audible range. The vacuum cleaner would drive it nuts, flipping it on and off, changing the channels, and screwing up the color. I had to unplug it before cleaning.

(38,346 posts)A woman thought her television was possessed. It was turning on and off, changing channels, etc., all by itself. The television repair guy came out and replaced all the remote control components, but it didn't fix the problem.
They eventually figured out it was her parakeet imitating the ultrasonic tones the remote made.
