Florida Woman Survives Being Hit By Flying Turtle

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) — It’s not unusual for rocks and other debris to crash through a windshield and injure a driver or passenger — but a turtle?

A 71-year-old woman riding with her daughter on Florida’s Interstate 95 suffered a gashed forehead Wednesday when a turtle smashed through the windshield of their car, striking her, the Daytona Beach News-Journal reports.

The daughter pulled over and got help from another motorist. According to a 911 recording, both were surprised by what they found.

“There is a turtle in there,” the man can be overheard saying.

Turtle was apparently unharmed.

1. Hard to believe that a turtle was tossed by traffic on I-95...

...with thousands of cars going bumper to bumper. I'd bet someone threw it out of a window or something.

3. The shape of their shell resembles an airfoil

But the method of propulsion seems to be lacking

7. Flapping their flippers would not create sufficient thrust

to overcome the drag created by the rough surface of the shell. Also, unless the turtle manages to achieve far more velocity than a turtle is normally capable of, the difference between the speed of the air traveling over the carapace vs. the air flowing across the plastron would be insufficient to create any lift at all. Does it work in the water, though?

6. (WARNING: GRAPHIC) The fam were driving down a Flaw'duh highway with me in the back seat

when a huge turtle stomped out into the roadway (1-75? US-19? It was a long time ago). We didn't hit it; the truck to our left did, and didn't brake at all. I had burned into my memory the horrific sight of a smashed shell spinning next to our car, slinging gore like a pinwheel firework of turtle guts.

9. At the ER, they always ask you what happened.

"A flying turtle hit me" would have been great.
