The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsHarry Belafonte has been on my mind since yesterday
He was 94 on March 1st. He has also retired from public life.
Harry walked with giants in the struggle for civil rights but he also has an amazing catalogue of fabulous music.
What are your favorite Belafonte songs?
With Miriam
Love you Harry

(218 posts)Back in the last century when that album came out, I asked my mom to purchase it for me when she went downtown to shop.
She did, and when she heard Harry sing out -- Day-O -- she huffed and said "I thought it was going to be something like that!"
Well, I played that album so much she came to love it, and Harry, too; so much so that I had to take her up to one of his concerts at The Greek Theater in LA's Griffith Park.

(17,617 posts)My all time favorite, though it's really hard to choose. But the lyrics and him singing them with that voice as smooth as butter - well, I fell in love with that song and to that song a long, long time ago.
Thank you so much for this thread, but I have to say I had no idea he was 94. He just seems ageless to me.

(296,105 posts)True story - I was driving a close friend's son to the repast for his grandmother and put the CD in - we sang along to Try to Remember and when we reached his aunt's home, the same song was background music. I thought I knew grandma well but had no idea this was her favorite song - PERIOD.

(2,012 posts)station has been playing black and women composers and singers for the last two months to honor great civil rights leaders and also to honor the ten Boulder people who were killed on March 22. Harry Belafonte's beautiful spirituals Oh Freedom and My Lord What a Morning brought tears and comfort to many of us.

These people are examples for all - good music - they sang with the best - our radio stations are more racist than our musicians and singers.
