(22,025 posts)Our house is in the Lower Catskills on the Upper Delaware River surrounded by forest. There is an abundance of wildlife including bear, dear, eagles, hawks, several varieties of ducks and lots more.
I recently discovered large cat prints and a neighbor told me they were from a bobcat that weighed about 30-35 lbs. Thankfully, they tend to be reclusive and they usually do their hunting during the night and early morning.
I guess it's a feature of living in the woods.

And I know it's a cat, and younger ones would be around that size, and similarly colored.

(442 posts)I stopped it at one point and you could barely make out the "points" or tufts on the ears and the tail seemed shorter. It also has the white spots on the backs of his/her ears.
And...big, squishy feet that need to be poked.

Fortunately my wife is very good at patching up idiot humans who do similarly stupid things and carries everything she needs to make such repairs in our first aid kits.
Bobcats are powerful little beasts. Whenever I encounter them I give them the same space I'd give a bear.
My brother once encountered a bobcat who was carrying her kittens over a fence, one at a time. He stayed well away.
