Apparently this year's contest was just about as dire as ever, with the UK garnering nil points in the final for a pretty crap song.
We didn't watch, even though this is one of the most watched TV events in the world. However I've been reading the comment threads on various European Facebook groups and found them more entertaining than the show could possibly have been. Lots of Brits carping about the performance of the English entry or complaining that 'it's all political', or trying to derail into absolutely weird stuff.
The first and last Eurovision show I watched was in 1974 when ABBA won with 'Waterloo' and changed the direction of pop music.

(23,736 posts)Just a few weeks ago. I had never heard of Eurovision before I watched the movie. I had to Google it to see it if was a real contest. lol
I haven't really watched any of the song competition shows. The judges all talk to much.

Will Ferrell brings his own interpretation to any of the subjects he tackles.
I am always surprised and delighted when I do hear a hit from Europe, that isn't for the American market.

(20,871 posts)However a decade or two ago they changed the scoring system to give the public too much of a say, whereas originally it comprised national judging panels of people largely from the professional world of music. Now each area of Europe votes politically. That said there have been many great songs winning still.
Embarrassing for Ireland, even though we have won it 7 times, we have been sending utter trash to represent us over the last 2 decades. They moved it away from the songwriter to the Louis Walsh Wannabees.

(6,261 posts)To be fair, I didn't watch it but I'm confident that that would've been the case.

(985 posts)They were the worst!!!! Also I paid to text my vote as soon as the voting started and got an sms the next day saying my vote didn't count because it came in too late. Clearly the whole thing was rigged!!!!!!!!!!
As a friend said, it's just so much fun to be able to complain about something that doesn't matter, for a change. It's exhausting to care about the capitol ri....tourists, and fascists, and racists, and...
I watched some of it. The Netherlands 🇳🇱 had my favorite song. Now I'm just hoping the potential Super Spreader Event won't make our numbers spike again.

(41,552 posts)Speaking of Waterloo, the UK certainly met its Waterloo this time. Only country to get the famous Nul Points.
I don't think our song deserved to win; but I think zero was rather harsh. The voting tends to be a political popularity contest, as much as a music contest, at least since about 1990, after the break-up of the Soviet Union. The pro-Russia countries tend to support each other, as do the anti-Russia post-Soviet countries. The UK isn't involved in all that, but we aren't the most popular country in Europe at the moment!
Anyway, it was fun.
