Black Panther: Danai Gurira's Okoye Returning for Disney+ Spinoff Series
According to The Hollywood Reporter, not only will the Black Panther star reprise her role as Okoye in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, but she is also set to appear in an unnamed origin spinoff series for Disney+. While Wakanda Forever director Ryan Coogler is developing a series based on the African nation of Wakanda for the House of Mouse's streamer, it is unclear if that is the drama the trade is referencing. Coogler signed a five-year deal to develop various projects for Disney.
Filming for Wakanda Forever is expected to begin in Atlanta this summer. Letitia Wright, Lupita Nyong'o, Winston Duke, Angela Bassett and Martin Freeman will also return for the sequel, which will build on the legacy established by the late Chadwick Boseman. Boseman starred as T'Challa in the first Black Panther film as well as in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame and died in August 2020 at the age of 43 due to colon cancer.
"It's going to be different, of course, without our king [Chadwick Boseman]
but I know that all of us are dedicated to reimagining or carrying on his legacy in this new Black Panther," Nyong'o said in an interview. Marvel Studios has no plans to recast the character of T'Challa and also said it will not insert Boseman using CGI and special effects.
